Day 22 – Perspectives

(85 miles)

This will be a short post. Today was one of those days. You know, when everything seems to be against you. Things fall over – and land on your toe, your head is aching, its cold (again), every mile seems longer – and uphill – and then your gut starts getting irritable, REAL irritable with 50 miles still to ride. For the first time on the trip I was feeling grumpy! I ended up having to ride slowly as the others went on ahead. As the pain in my gut got really bad, I was forced to just go and knock on the door of a big house and ask to use their rest-room. The woman who answered was ultra-friendly and sympathetic. About 10 miles down the road, I was forced to pull over in the forest and squat behind some bushes. The fact that I was in a designated public hunting area certainly helped to speed the process up a bit!

But a text from Jeff, who is still a day or two behind us put all my day’s woes in perspective. He told us that his sister had just died, so he’d be heading home tomorrow for a week. Thinking about how he must be feeling makes me realise how insignificant my struggles today were. Jeff – our thoughts are with you and your family.

Tonight we stayed with relatives of friends of Patricks family (yeah, any connection will do!) just outside Carbondale. More home-cooked food, with milk and cookies to finish with. A good end to another tiring day.

Ready by 6am 🙂

Novelty mailboxes. For the man who has everything - except an email account.

I just love the fact this store advertises itself as 'girly'.

Sorry you had such a rough time. Hope the stomach problems clear up quickly! Charles printed out your blog (minus photos) for AF so she is slowly reading her way through them.

Been thinking of you all – hope you are feeling better! Everything here is going as well as can be expected, and I can’t wait to be back on the trail next week. Get better and have fun! – Jeff

So sad that Jeff’s sister died. Hope he’s ok and that is certainly something to put things into perspective.
