Day 8 – Rest Day in Blacksburg

(0 miles ) :-)

We decided to stay a day in Blacksburg and let our legs recover a bit and also take care of various tasks. Michael and Jane kindly let us stay another night and Michael even cooked us (in his own words) ‘the best pancakes you’ll ever taste’ for breakfast.

Carlsberg don't make pancakes, but if they did...

We rode into town and visited the library, did the obligatory look around a couple of bike shops and then popped into Moes for lunch. I ordered the ‘Homewrecker’ burrito. Say no more!

Is this what the TransAm does to your bike?!

Moe's employees tell it like it is

It was graduation day so the town was teeming with parents and students. We rode up to the college football stadium which seats 60,000 and is apparently sold-out for every game. Just like my university hockey matches…

I'll Photoshop the fans into this picture later

Then it was off back ‘home’, via the market to pick up some dinner (‘the best pesto you’ll ever have’). Tomorrow we set off again, but for now we’re immensely grateful to Michael and Jane for being such brilliant hosts at almost no notice. Virginia is definitely my favourite state of the trip so far…

Cycle-touring is all about just carrying what you absolutely, definitely need - and no more.

Rumour has it the wytheville rescue centre will let cyclists stay for free… Looks like an ambulance station to you or I.

Thanks Dave – in fact one of our group got us a sweet place for the night (see upcoming Day 9 entry).

Always good to hear of suggested places to stay though from people with regular internet access!

I’m having so much fun following your journey on here! I’ve got lists galore – featuring what I need to buy, bring, do and borrow for my portion of the trip… getting very excited about the big adventure and the impending BIG climb up Hoosier Pass! Keep the posts coming! Peace.

  3. Michael says:

Write to me if you find better pancakes in America. Of course, I know you won’t.
Keep having fun and be safe.

  4. Ninjim says:

Out of interest, does the route your taking sets you with or against the prevailing winds across the USA?

  5. Jessie says:

I think I’ve worked out why you’re on this bike tour….

    The food.
